#Truth Devotional – Day 5

Spend time with Jesus

1 John 1

‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.’

This verse speaks of the Word – the Truth as being God himself. But we are told that it was also ‘with God’, this is speaking of the holy trinity – the Father (God), The Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. He was God in the beginning.

Jesus also plainly states that he is The Truth.

John 14:6

“I am the way and the truth and the life.”

Jesus is the embodiment of God, He is the embodiment of genuine truth.

I once heard a good illustration that will help us here:

How do they train bank tellers to identify fake notes? They don’t. Instead they make them handle thousands and thousands of genuine notes every day. They get to know the genuine article so intimately that when a fake comes along, it is easily spotted.

We need to do the same thing with truth. We need to be spending time with The Person of Truth – Jesus. Regularly meeting with him, chatting, praying.

We need to be sure we are not walking blindly along with a fake Jesus either. We need to know that the Jesus we walk with is the Jesus we read about in the Word of God, in the Bible. The two need to go together. They should be used hand-in-hand – the written truth and the person and spirit of truth both supporting and agreeing with each other.

Then we will know THE genuine, authentic TRUTH and be able to spot the lies when they come.

On the day of battle we will be able to buckle our belt, knowing that our armour is the genuine article, that our faith is real and strong, that our salvation is genuine and secure, that our righteousness is true and just, that the gospel we proclaim is sure and that the Sword of the Spirit is actually going to separate bone from marrow!

Prayer: Thank you Jesus that you are the person of Truth, Thank you that we can trust and rely upon your Word – The Bible. Help me to turn my heart and mind towards you when I am confused about what is true. I know I can stand on your word and that you are holding me firm. Thank you for your faithfulness and love. Amen
