‘Desperate we are for You’ Devotional – Day 3

Untamed Majesty

Isaiah 2

Go into the rocks, hide in the ground from the fearful presence of the Lord and the splendour of his majesty!

Isaiah 2: 10 (NIV)

A few years ago my wife and I went to South Africa on holiday.

Nearby where we were staying was a cheetah sanctuary. One of the highlights of visiting the sanctuary was that you could go into the enclosure and stroke a cheetah – a great photo opportunity right? These cheetahs were hand reared from birth, so were ‘tame’.

I certainly would never approach a wild big-cat! Even still, we had to sign a disclaimer and have a few game keepers with us, one holding the cheetah on a lead.

We waited about an hour for the cheetah to be calm. All these were sensible precautions but even still, stroking a cheetah was still an incredible risk to take! Even though it was a tame animal, it was still wild!

God is a king. Not only that, He is The King of kings! He is a king whose power is unrivalled both in the spiritual realm as well as the physical. He is not a God to be taken lightly or to be messed with.

So often we get an unbalanced view of God being a cuddly teddy-bear like father figure. Yes, God is our father, he is our friend but he is also our king! We should be very careful to humble ourselves when we approach His throne in worship. In the reading the people were prideful and Isaiah warned them to run and hide as God’s power and awesome majesty would surely destroy them.

We need to remember that God is not tame.

He is full of awesome power and majesty. As we approach His throne in worship we should come with our heads bowed low and hour hearts lifted high in love and praise.

Prayer

Oh God, You are holy and awesome in power. I humble myself before you as You are my mighty King! How I love You. Lord. – Amen
