‘Desperate we are for You’ Devotional – Day 1

Wake Up!

Psalm 51

Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn.

Psalm 57:8 (NIV)

Don’t you love the smell of brewing coffee in the morning? I know I do. How about the smell of hot bacon sizzling in the pan? Even as I write this my mouth is beginning to water just with the thought of them.

My body responds to the smell of food, knowing that it tastes good and that it will nourish my body. Even when I do not feel particularly hungry or thirsty, when those smells reach my nostrils my body is awakened.

Suddenly I realise that I am actually hungry or thirsty and then I really want to have that cup of coffee or that bacon sandwich.

Sometimes it is like this in our relationship with God.

I have found that I can catch myself sleeping in my relationship with Him. Life can happen and things can get stagnant. Things like having personal times with God on a regular basis can sometimes fall by the wayside as the busyness of life gets in the way.

So there are moments in our lives when we need to get a wake-up call! We need to wake up and smell the coffee!

As we are brought round back into the conscious presence of God, as we realise again our need for Him and our dependence on Him, the rest of our lives respond and a hunger for more of God and His presence begins to grow within us again.

So stir yourself up today. Just as the psalmist did, make a decision to worship despite your circumstances. As you draw near to God, He will draw near to you.

Prayer

Wake me up, Lord! Give me a sense of Your presence once again. Stir a hunger within me for more of You – Amen.
